World’s leading trade fair accompanies an industry on the upswing

  • Trade fair reflects positive mood in the photonics market

  • Around 50 percent international exhibitors expected

  • Premiere: World of QUANTUM

In the spring of 2022, Munich will once again be the hub of the international photonics industry for a few days: From April 26 to 29, the world’s leading trade fair LASER World of PHOTONICS 2022 will be opening its doors at the Munich exhibition grounds and be a key milestone in driving forward the upswing in the industry. In addition, the World of QUANTUM will provide a new stage for the future field of quantum technology.

The German photonics industry is making a speedy economic recovery after a decline in revenue in the pandemic year 2020, and is looking to the future with optimism. The industry association SPECTARIS forecasts considerable growth of up to 14 percent for 2021 and a significant increase in the years to follow. The world market for photonics has also experienced strong growth despite the pandemic. “We are pleased to be making an important contribution with LASER World of PHOTONICS 2022, timed well in the spring, to continuing the positive trend in the photonics industry,” says Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, Deputy CEO of Messe München.

The trade fair had to be postponed in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the scientific congress did at least still go ahead in a digital format. “The upcoming trade fair will bring international trade visitors back together on site to discuss innovations and products in depth, step up existing business relationships and cultivate new ones,” says Dr. Pfeiffer. Exhibition Director Anke Odouli adds: “We will be relying on our detailed health and safety concept, which has already proven successful on several occasions.”

Almost 50 percent international participants

LASER World of PHOTONICS in 2022 will also be a broad-based international event. As of the mid of January, companies from 30 countries have already registered. The U.S. and China are particularly well represented, and a company from Australia has also booked a stand for the first time at the trade fair. That means that just under half of all the exhibitors filling five halls again at the Munich exhibition grounds are from abroad. The market leaders from the photonics industry and key industry-related research institutes have likewise confirmed their participation, including TRUMPF Laser- und Systemtechnik, Coherent Shared Services, IPG Laser, LASER COMPONENTS Germany, the Fraunhofer Society, Laser 2000, Newport Spectra-Physics, Berlin Partner for Business and Technology, and JENOPTIK Optical Systems.

In large parts of the economy, innovations that don’t involve photonics are now inconceivable. Photonics is instrumental, for example, in making vehicles future-proof, provides physicians with live transmissions from living cells, optimizes quality control in industry, or enables data transfer from space at the speed of light. The main topics at the trade fair are laser systems for industrial production, laser and optoelectronics, optics, sensors, measuring and testing technology, and optical engineering.

World of QUANTUM—a visionary platform

The World of QUANTUM will be celebrating its premiere in 2022 in its own hall, dealing with what is currently probably the most exciting future field in photonics: quantum technology and its various potential applications. With it, Messe München is creating a platform to network research, industry and users, discuss suitable implementation of the latest research results in systems, and present initial examples for applying this future technology in computing and cryptography, sensors and imaging, communication and medicine. Dr. Wilhelm Kaenders, chairman of the LASER World of PHOTONICS Exhibitor Advisory Board and director of TOPTICA Photonics AG: “Just as Messe München, back in 1973, discovered the then newly emerging laser applications as a key topic for a new global, leading technology trade fair, it is assuming a visionary role once again focusing this time on the topic of quantum. Munich is expected to be a central market place in the coming years for the technology of the unfolding century.”

LASER World of PHOTONICS will be held from April 26 to 29, 2022 at the Messe München Exhibition Center, and the next World of Photonics Congress in June 2023 with the next trade fair.
